Audiobook Narration and Production
Audiobook narration is a specialised area of voiceover. Narrating several chapters, possibly adding up to hours of audio, in a tone that keeps listeners engaged, whilst still matching the conversational, explanatory, wonderment or didactic tone of the original isn't every voiceover's cup of tea. But I enjoy each audiobook I work on immensely. They all offer challenges, but open up vastly different worlds to the listener, and I work with the publisher/author to get that right early in the process - so that we can all be confident of a great audiobook. The reviews and awards bear that out, but take a listen to some of the samples above - or buy one of my audiobooks and listen to the whole work.
For non-fiction work especially, what works on the page sometimes doesn't work in audio, and there are edits and changes to be negotiated. For example, a long, bulleted list of items over more than one page will inevitably be viewed in print as a lot of items even before reading the first bullet; and sometimes that large number of bullets is an additional visual thought the author wants to convey. But how do you make that same point in audio? Well, there are some options - my job as producer is to explain what these are, and then the author or publisher will get to choose which they think works best.
I have edited and produced a number of audiobooks, working to the ACX exacting standards. Although this painstaking editing work can be time consuming, it adds a high level of quality control, and also allows input from the author or publisher.
